New Balance MADE1978

The Classic 990 Gets a Modern Update.

This spring, New Balance is launching an innovative new MADE silhouette that is inspired by the beloved classic New Balance 990. New Balance designers re-thought the design using techniques that apply a combination of new technology and construction methods paired with the classic vibes of the 900 to create the New Balance MADE 1978– something never before seen from the New England footwear maker. Further extending the company’s commitment to domestic manufacturing, the 1978s are crafted in New Balance‘s Norridgewock, ME facility.

The New Balance MADE 1978 was created as a response to the classic 990 silhouette that was originally developed in 1978. The 990 took four years of development, starting in 1978, and when it was released in 1982 was the pinnacle of technology, quality materials and performance design. The New Balance 1978 is an innovative take on the original 990 concepts with a focus on modern silhouettes and manufacturing methods.

Back in the late 1970s, New Balance worked with Vibram as the original partner to create the 990 outsole for the best combination of lightweight and durability. That partnership continues with the MADE 1978 and Vibram once again used its expertise to create a new one-piece injection sole unit that is lighter and highly durable compared to other ground contact IMEVA soles. Keeping with the Made in USA theme, the New Balance MADE 1978 Vibram sole unit is manufactured at the New Balance Brighton manufacturing facility.

This type of evolution of New Balance classic styles paired with materials and manufacturing innovation puts an interesting spin on the MADE concept. The 1978 is the perfect bridge between an iconic 990 design and the modern direction of the new New Balance.
