Brimfield Day 2: Treasure & Rain (Part I)

Our second day at the Brimfield flea market started off with a light drizzle, but cleared up in the afternoon and proved a successful outing. Barbour coats and rubber boots were the order of the day. I probably saw more waxed canvas yesterday than in the last five years combined. Personally, I opted for a GoreTex shell, that I paired surprisingly well with a pair of McNairy suede chukkas (though if I had to do it over, I would have opted for Bean boots). I saw a lot of things I wanted to buy, but managed to exercise some restraint. I did manage to pick up a few things and will share a breakdown of my purchases here soon.

Remember this boat motor company?

My fellow vintage seekers Mr. Sean Sullivan and Mr. Nick Schonberger battle the morning rain.

As expected, the Japanese were out in force. This gent runs a vintage booth at the Brooklyn Flea.
Nice BSA backpack. I have the same one.
I told the vendor sell this sign to The National, but it was already sold ($1200).

Brimfield’s so incredible, and your pictures reminder me fondly of the one time I was able to go 4 years ago. I experienced the same overcast weather, and sported a green NATO Barbour International jacket.

Jesus, this place really does look amazing. I’ve never been to anything like this in the UK, nothing even comes close by the look of these pictures. Looking forward to seeing what you’ve bought.

    Zachary on May 13, 2010 12:43 PM:

Do civilians buy stuff at Brimfield or is it mostly representatives from various industries? I don’t mean this to sound as snarky as it sounds, but 1200 for a rusty sign seems to bespeak a deep-pocketed presence.

Sorry guys to exploit this post.
I couldn’t manage to comment on an older post dating back to November 2009.
Could anybody get me in touch with whoever was selling these boots?

Gio — the comments close after 60 days.

Those boots were being sold by J.Crew.

Mitch Frank on May 13, 2010 1:12 PM:

They’re NOS; some are still available at the 484 Broadway location.

    gio on May 13, 2010 1:22 PM:

Wow, these photos are amazing! All these flea market posts are giving me inspiration to hop in a car and head out on a small town treasure hunt ;)

    Dave on May 13, 2010 4:19 PM:

$1200 is a deal for that National sign

I’d buy it and start a bar called “The National”

    Jacob on May 13, 2010 7:48 PM:

Not to be a both, but can anyone give me any info on the green military style jacket that Mr. Sean Sullivan (or possibly Mr. Nick Schonberger) is wearing?

    Thanks.

Also, in reply to Dave, I think you’d have a bit of trouble with the band of the same name if you did that.

    Hi

Does anyone know who makes Sean’s beard? It looks like last season’s but with a slightly different material. Stunning fit. I must own one.

    Ganesha on May 14, 2010 8:23 AM:

    i like your website

    Sean on May 14, 2010 10:36 AM:

Jacob – It’s a heavy military shirt I picked up at vintage store in Nyc. Don’t know much about it? I think they are pretty common.

Mr. Maggio – You were sporting quite the neck warmer last time I saw you! Is it no longer in existence?

    Chris on May 14, 2010 2:03 PM:

Sean, did you by chance fly out of O’Hare on Monday evening? I could swear I was standing next to you in the security line.

That being said, I need to make it to Brimfield the next time this goes down. Great shots!

Michael Williams on May 14, 2010 2:04 PM:

Sean was in O’Hare Monday and I was with him. Do you have a Red Camera?

    Sean on May 14, 2010 2:22 PM:

Chris – I did! Was in Chicago with MW doing some work stuff. Too funny.

    Chris on May 14, 2010 2:27 PM:

Ha! I knew it! Nice boots.

    Chris on May 14, 2010 2:34 PM:

MW- No I do not have a a Red Camera… however, I wish I did. I was wearing the Alden+Context Roy boots, a navy jacket, probably had some green in ear headphones on, and an olive-ish backpack.

    Chris on May 14, 2010 2:46 PM:

And how could I forget my Cleveland Indians hat!

Michael Williams on May 14, 2010 2:54 PM:

Oh yeah Chris — we saw you. So funny.

    Corey on May 14, 2010 3:46 PM:

how much were the bats going for? i scored a game-used Jack Clark bat at the UWS flea a few months back for like $15. looks great just leaning against my wall at home… and its easily accessible if anyone gets out of line

    Andrea on May 15, 2010 11:19 AM:

Columbus Washboard is still in business. Buy American folks; if you all buy one it’ll blow their monthly sales goals out of the water. (I have two of their boards.)

    Jacob on May 17, 2010 12:30 AM:

Man I miss Brimfield. Been for the last two Mays. Sadly I’m out West now.

    uhlander on May 17, 2010 1:06 PM:

This place looks incredible! I hit up several places, much smaller I presume, in Pennsylvania(Zern’s Market, Perkiomen Sale, Jakes Flea Market, Belleville Auction, Green Dragon, etc). Do the same vendors come every year? How about a weekly version?

    Lily on May 17, 2010 5:29 PM:

I have the same BSA backpack, it once belonged to a Jeffery D.

    Darrell on May 19, 2010 1:02 PM:

OMG!!!!!! the card catalogues and the moose head are amazing!!!!!
I am assuming they both were rather pricey????

    Eric on May 20, 2010 9:21 AM:

Michael- Any chance you have the info on the grey wooden box with the type “BOILER No 16” on it? I would love to contact the dealer and see if it is still available. I would buy it from your picture. You can send it to my email, if you don’t want to post. Thanks
