America's WASPiest Home Movies

Who couldn’t use an escape to Nantucket for a week or five right about now? I know I sure can. My pal Stephen sent me a link to the below video of Nantucket c.1950 about a year ago and I remember thinking how terrific the clips are and that they would be interesting fodder for this space. The YouTube user Lipwak (who could have America’s WASPiest collection of YouTube videos) has posted a few dozen home movies from his grandparents collection, everything from Bermuda to West Point. Some of my favorites are below.

Nantucket 1950

Football at the Yale Bowl

Foxhunt 1920s

Stamford, New London, Montauk by Boat 1920s

Tour of Princeton University c.1928

Cuba 1957

Smith College

i just got back from cape cod and i can tell you that the summer up in those parts beats austin’s current record breaking heat wave summer. 2 weeks wasn’t even close to enough.

    great home movies.

great finds. I love seeing these- so exotic viewing them from out in So Cal. : )

Wow, Princeton with more trees and no ghastly concrete boxes or abstract metal “artwork.” Must have been quite something.

The bits of the Smith campus that appear in the video look about the same today. The students … not so much.

Wow, fantastic. I’m a So Cal lifer but just visited Nantucket for the first time 3 weeks ago. So great to see that lighthouse – we walked to it daily. Amazing.

Yes, it brings back memories. I do believe if you look closely in the first film you can see Ted Kennedy driving off the pier…
