Antidote for a Cold Friday

It has been a pretty cold fall in New York thus far. Walking to work this morning all I could think about was the fact that I am running low on inspiration and that it is freaking cold. So with that in mind, I put together some things that I wish I were wearing this chilly Friday. Descriptions after the jump.

Shetland sweater – Obediant Sons

Jeans – Levis

Blackwatch plaid toggle coat – Hickey

Cordovan shoes – Grenson

Oxford shirt – Brooks Brothers Black Fleece

Coffee from the deli

Black Deerskin gloves – Mario Portolano

Wool scarf – Pria

These all look great — note the black fleece sale on gilt groupe btw — but would the toggle coat be warm? Finding a warm, dressy coat is a serious challenge.

    Tucker on December 5, 2008 1:27 PM:

The black watch waxed cotton toggle coat is incredible.

    streetetiquette on December 5, 2008 1:29 PM:

great look for right now its so cold.

Michael Williams on December 5, 2008 1:39 PM:

And it is on sale for $350! I’m going to purchase at lunch.

    Suki on December 5, 2008 1:44 PM:

Thank you, thank you, thank you for making what is typically an impossible task (shopping for my pernickety boyfriend) quite easy.

The Beggar on December 5, 2008 1:44 PM:

    No hard stuff, Michael?!

    christopher on December 5, 2008 1:46 PM:

on sale at the Soho store?

The Beggar on December 5, 2008 1:48 PM:

Oh, and Tucker, the Hickey toggle coat is on sale (40% off), too –

    larsd4 on December 5, 2008 2:14 PM:

Need a hat Michael. Think about a tweed Irish cap or woolen watch cap. The rest is perfect.

    Michael on December 5, 2008 3:02 PM:

OMG Hickey suits for $$$400 dollars…. I clicked on the link and tooled around the site to see their beautiful suits on a crazy sale. Thank YOU !!!

Michael Williams on December 5, 2008 3:12 PM:

I’m not joking. I went and picked up the coat for $380 out the door.

You should do the same. The entire store is 65% off. Tell them ACL sent you.

    christopher on December 5, 2008 3:26 PM:

Anyone know how a Hickey suit fits? Im a 42R but still like a slim look… thoughts?

wayne pate on December 5, 2008 3:35 PM:

Hi Michael, What Levi’s are these? Are they Capital E?

    Michael on December 5, 2008 3:45 PM:

They look from far to be their raw denim as opposed to their slimmer 514’s I could be totally off…

Michael Williams on December 5, 2008 3:59 PM:

505s from Japan. Its nearly impossible to find good jeans shot flat (which is important for the layout of this). But the Japanese love to shoot stills on white backgrounds…

    Natsumi on December 5, 2008 4:01 PM:

I like your new coat. So good!!!

    Michael on December 5, 2008 4:15 PM:

    Hey ACL,

Do you have a member email address so that I can sign up for I would like to be able to access their sales.

    Thank you,

I don’t have one (I can’t stand getting that sort of email all the time), but I think the Gilt PR person trolls this site and can help. Gilt PR, are you out there? Help!

I can only say that because I am a PR person too! ha

    ERBS on December 5, 2008 4:44 PM:

You can also get Gilt invites from styleforum. There’s an affiliate thread there.

    acemile on December 5, 2008 4:45 PM:

The Black Fleece sale is over and actually only lasted about a day. I’m not the Gilt PR person but I can send an invitation link if you want.

    Michael on December 5, 2008 5:13 PM:

    @ ASH

If you could I would appreciate it. My email is I created that account for things like urbandaddy, sample sales, or rstaurant openings. It helps to have an email address for all those daily updates(I get one from ACL almost everday)
Anyways Happy Repeal Day I will be out and about imbibing in Williamsburg.

    c.a. on December 5, 2008 10:59 PM:

love a lot of that hickey price, and those sale prices are pretty tempting. I really just wish they would ditch that stupid pot leaf motif, it’s a deal-breaker on so many of the pieces.

Clell Tickle on December 6, 2008 4:33 AM:

Michael do you tuck your oxfords in or out?

    jacob on December 6, 2008 2:46 PM:

in lieu of the japanese 505’s (which are beautiful but hard to get) is strongly recommend Rugby’s raw denim. they fit like APCs but with no stacking at the leg and a slightly roomier leg for the classic, collegiate look. and with the sale at rugby they’re only $50!

    angelo on December 6, 2008 5:10 PM:

    Ash and Michael!

I am in dire need of a Gilt invitation, any help?

    e.b. strong on December 6, 2008 10:18 PM:

Do include your choice for long underwear or undergarments in general in the near future…

    william on December 7, 2008 1:58 PM:

i can give you a gilt invite. just give me your email address. i might forget to check out this comment section again so email me at

    Frankie on December 8, 2008 10:28 AM:

I too am searching for a gilt invite, if somebody could help me out:

Lisa Wells on December 8, 2008 1:00 PM:

hey – this looks good. we love being on the site. lw

    pete on December 8, 2008 4:28 PM:

those levis are they the 1967 505’s

    Ryan on December 11, 2008 12:20 AM:

I haven’t tried Black Fleece oxford’s yet, are they as roomy as BB’s “slim-fit”?

    Jim on December 26, 2008 10:10 AM:

I waited to long to pull the trigger on the Hickey Blackwatch coat and now the large size coats are out of stock. I was thinking of buying a medium or XL. How is the fit and which way should I go?

    Jim on December 26, 2008 2:38 PM:

I went with the XL. I’m 6′ and 190. I was told that it should fit fine. I also told them that ACL sent me.

Michael Williams on December 27, 2008 12:40 AM:

Jim — sorry I didn’t reply sooner. You are going to love the coat! Very stylish and a great price.

    Jim on December 27, 2008 10:34 AM:

    No problem. Love the blog.
