From the Desk of… | Ovadia & Sons

Brothers Ariel and Shimon Ovadia are easily be described with the word particular. Part of me thinks the term to describe them could actually be obsessive. They agonize over everything — in a good way. When it comes to their line Ovadia & Sons (which was just nominated for the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund), the details are very important to them. For me, as a consumer, that translates into a lot of trust in their product. I know everything Ovadia puts out into the world is held to high standards. If their name is on it, so they want it to be the best. I know if I buy a shirt for them they have gone to great lengths to ensure that the fit is just right. The twins care deeply about the construction, the fabric, the fit and they won’t stop tinkering until everything is perfect. This obsession with aesthetics extends all the way to the décor of their Wooster Street office and showroom.

From the Desk of… Bergdorf Goodman’s Mimi Fukuyoshi

From the Desk of… is a window into the world and workspace of some of ACL’s most stylish friends.

As the Vice President/DMM of men’s sportswear and shoes for Bergdorf Goodman, Mimi Fukuyoshi has one of the most coveted roles in the business, let alone at of the best stores in the world. It’s not an accident that Mimi is in this role, she’s one of the smartest and most well liked people in the business. Mimi is proof that good things happen to good people, not to say she hasn’t earned it because she absolutely has.

One of the reasons that Mimi and I first connected was over a shared love of collecting. A few years ago we spoke about her then incomplete collection of Gentry magazine. She was actively seeking the final few missing copies, and we decided then that when her collection was complete it would be great to share with the ACL faithful. Today that conversation becomes a reality with a look into Mimi’s workspace and at all of those Gentry issues.

In her own words, Mimi describes what’s on her desk:

* Gentry Magazine – Men’s magazine published between 1951 and 1957. It was a quarterly and only 22 issues were published. It took me about 10 years of eBay, flea markets, used book stores, but I have all of them. I was introduced to them when I was a buyer for Bloomingdale’s and bought Engineered Garments for the store in 1999 or 2000. I asked Daiki what inspired his collection and he cited Gentry Magazine. He had a few issues which he brought out to show me and I was hooked. It became something of a mission of mine to collect them all. This magazine could never exist today: there are articles about Harris tweed, for example, and they included a swatch! Or Japanese woodblock prints with a print included!

From the Desk of… A Continuous Lean

The From the Desk of series is one of the oldest and longest running posts on ACL. I hear from a lot of people that say it is their favorite thing on the site, something I have to say that I tend to agree with. Honestly though, it is harder to pull off than I ever could have imagined. It’s difficult to find interesting people that also have intriguing work areas — and get them to open said desks to the world and the ravenous commenters here. So it is something maybe less explored than it should be.

I actually have been thinking about featuring my own desk for about the past year — considering if maybe people will like it, or at the very least people will detest it and a comment flame war will ensue — but I never really felt it was totally right, not yet ready for public consumption. Recently though, with the addition of a proper desk chair (a new Knoll Generation chair, which was sent gratis from the Pennsylvania-based design company) I realized that I’m as ready now as I will ever be.

From the Desk of… Esquire’s Nick Sullivan

From the Desk of… is a window into the world and workspace of some of ACL’s most stylish friends.

It has been more than a year since the last time installment of this series, one of ACL’s most popular. Up until two weeks ago I just wasn’t very inspired to ask anyone to participate. That was until I had a chat with Esquire Fashion Director Nick Sullivan during fashion week. Nick is an avid collector, eBay obsessive (like myself) and has such a great sense of style that he is the perfect fit for this series. Thankfully he was was willing to let me come by his office in the Hearst Tower and poke around for an hour or so and tell me all about all of the great things in his office. It is always a interesting experience to get a look into the creative environment of someone as cool and talented as Nick.

I remember not knowing what to expect the first time I met Richard Chai. Going into the meeting I had no reason to think anything bad, but with designers you never know. That was way back in 2005, and while I sit here now I can’t think of a nicer designer, let alone person than Richard. Soft spoken and and almost shy, Richard was one of the first people I asked for my From the Desk of… series. Crickets. Eventually with a little help from Molly at KCD, Richard agreed to let ACL into his office.

Graphic designer, hardcore music lover and American patriot, the stylish Mr. Jeremy Dean graciously agreed to allow our prying eyes on his desk at Urban Outfitters. Mr. Dean has been a long time ACL reader and was the impetus behind my recent field trip to Philadelphia. He, along with the other gentlemen on the men’s team, have really impressed me with the direction they are taking the store. Okay, enough chit chat. Take a few minutes and poke through Jeremy’s desk, I’m sure he won’t mind.

From the Desk of… is a window into the world and workspace of some of ACL’s most stylish friends.

This past week Mr. Frank Muytjens, J.Crew’s VP of men’s design, took some time out of his busy schedule to open up his office to ACL’s prying eyes.  After talking to Frank for a few minutes it was clear that we have a lot of the same interests. Everything from workwear to Japan and all sorts of other stylish things. If beer was involved we could have probably talked each other to death.

It was exciting to see the J.Crew offices and some of the work that goes into putting a collection together. Frank even touched on a few of the exciting things that are in the works for what is unofficially being called  “The Newsstand,”  J.Crew’s interesting new men’s store on Broadway. More on that soon enough. Desk details after the jump.
