We don’t usually go in for real estate porn. But we’re making an exception for one of the world’s last great castles in private hands, not to mention the ultimate gentlemanly residence. Glin Castle in County Limerick, the ancestral home of the FitzGerald clan for 700 years, was put on the market a few months ago for €6.5 million, or about $7.3 million. The 29th Knight of Glin, Desmond FitzGerald, died in 2011 with no male heirs, thus bringing a number of ancient titles, including Black Knight, to an end. Ireland’s foremost expert in art and antiques, and the inheritor of a sizable collection of same, he filled the castle with museum-quality pieces and made it one of the most beautiful houses in the world.

FitzGerald was an interesting character who attended Harvard and was briefly married to fashion icon Loulou de la Falaise. The likes of Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithfull and Talitha Getty have been guests at Glin. The castle, which has been listed with Christie’s International Real Estate affiliate Sherry FitzGerald, is situated on 23 aristocratic acres. Stunning architectural details, some original and some of which were added later, fill its 20,550 sq. ft. The furnishings and decorations, arranged in the Georgian style, are on offer to the buyer of the castle. It features a drawing room, dining room, smoking room, and library along with nine bedroom suites, with an adjoining wing containing three further reception rooms and five bedrooms. Because we all obviously need finely appointed castle to call our own.
