Hitting All the Blue Notes.

For decades denim shirts were marked by three words: extra long tails. It was Wrangler that led the charge, boasting in ads and on store displays about their elongated shirts. The extra length was designed for Levi’s loving cowboys and blue collar workers who needed a tough shirt that wouldn’t come untucked throughout the day. This was once the prime market for denim shirts, men who would scoff at the idea of ever appearing “fashionable.”

Oh how times have changed. That Americana staple has undergone quite a facelift over the years, and nowadays you can find denim shirts in all shapes and sizes, from cutaway collared dress shirts, to ultra distressed reproductions. Those extra long tails have now become just a small part of the denim shirt tale, so we give you our favorites after the jump. Giddy up.

Gustin makes the most beautiful denim shirt I have ever seen.

Tom Hemphill on November 13, 2014 10:38 AM:

Great selection, but a classic denim for decades has been the Rockmount Ranchwear version, out of Denver. I think that’s one of their diamond snap shirts Roy’s wearing. And it’s the one I wear, too. Thanks for a great website.

Hands down the best denim shirt out there is the one made by Wrangler. It’s stiff when you buy it, stays tucked in, comes in your neck and sleeve size, and is a fraction of what other brands cost.

Ray Hull on November 13, 2014 4:35 PM:

How ironic, focusing on APC* long shirt tails when nothing much offered today works well (read: stays tucked) in low-waisted jeans.

    Seriously, no Wrangler?

Great selection and post as always, Gents. Maybe check out The Real McCoy’s Joe McCoy Washed Wester Shirt and their 8HU Denim Serviceman Shirt Lot 132S both made from 7.5oz Denim as well. The quality is outstanding.

I am partial to the RRL wit it’s great wash, tone and detailing. I own two and they are real workhorses that both soften and fade with age… But in general, the denim shirt, for me, is a real staple. I love it with jeans (The Canadian Tuxedo) and it is extremely flexible- crossing over into dress up and pure work. Can’t live with out it. Nice overview here.

Joe Trickett on November 14, 2014 5:29 AM:

For me EG / Our Legacy are by far the best, Orslow / BDP second. Not feeling fake fading, just let a nice fitting practical shirt do the talking.

The Tellason collection could easily be included here.
