A Case for Reviving Seersucker Thursday.

Seersucker2

“Fun,” is not a word that your hear in reference to the Senate much, if at all, these days. Our governing body sits a perpetual standstill, with stone faced Senators in drab dark suits occupying both sides of the dividing line. Yes, there’s little joy left in politics these days, which is why we here at ACL propose that it’s time the Senate brings back Seersucker Thursday. Started by Senator Trent Lott in the late nineties, Seersucker Thursday added some much needed levity to D.C., that is until it was discontinued in 2012 because some Senators deemed the event too “frivolous.” But, really isn’t that the whole point? Clearly being deadly serious about every minute issue isn’t helping out our deadlocked Senate, so we say it’s high time to return some good humor to Capitol Hill. A bit of sartorial swagger wouldn’t hurt either.

Seersucker Thursday

Of course, Seersucker Thursday wasn’t just about being lighthearted for the sake of it, as the event was originally organized as a way to pay homage to the pre-air conditioning era when Senators used to don seersucker suits as a way of combating the Chamber’s ever-climbing temperatures. The “holiday” fell in late June and was a way of setting back the clock to a time when Senators not only dressed far more foppish, but they actually got shit done as well.

So, we say don’t worry about frivolity, embrace the seersucker in the Senate this summer, because we all need a reason to actually like Congress.

Never, ever did I expect to see Trent Lott on ACL.

Congress needs this. Make the case for all Americans to make greater sartorial decisions.

Ray Hull on May 29, 2014 3:56 PM:

    And dry cleaners Fridays.

    what a great idea!

I like this idea a lot and it may very well be what the senate needs. I may even start my own seersucker Thursday!

Seersuckers are the Hawaaian shirts of suits. You must be able to laugh at formality to pull them off. It’s about attitude, and I love it.

Such a great article. I’ve been waiting for Congress to bring back the Seersucker Thursday until I learned about it while reading a Wikipedia article on seersucker. Honestly, it is practical since seersucker is cooler, and most of the Senators could use a change of pace as far as style goes.

Michael Clason on May 30, 2014 2:25 PM:

The Senate needs a lot more than Seersucker Thursday to get “things” done. The “sucker” are the people who keep voting these people back into office.

    David on May 30, 2014 5:10 PM:

Only if they pronounce it “Theerthucker Thursday”

    Bebe on May 31, 2014 1:42 AM:

Right on, Jeff. A little “frivolity” seems just the ticket for a Senate rather full of itself. I’d be happy to buy a suit for one of my California Senators, Barbara Boxer. And seersucker’s such a boon amidst hot and stagnant air.
