From the Desk of… | Ovadia & Sons

Brothers Ariel and Shimon Ovadia are easily be described with the word particular. Part of me thinks the term to describe them could actually be obsessive. They agonize over everything – in a good way. When it comes to their line Ovadia & Sons (which was just nominated for the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund), the details are very important to them. For me, as a consumer, that translates into a lot of trust in their product. I know everything Ovadia puts out into the world is held to high standards. If their name is on it, so they want it to be the best. I know if I buy a shirt for them they have gone to great lengths to ensure that the fit is just right. The twins care deeply about the construction, the fabric, the fit and they won’t stop tinkering until everything is perfect. This obsession with aesthetics extends all the way to the décor of their Wooster Street office and showroom.

I’ve gotten to know Ariel and Shimon (though, I can admittedly, barely tell them apart) for a little more than a year, having worked with them on the J.Press York Street collection that they creative direct (and my firm does P.R. for; full disclosure). Over the time that I have known them, I have grown fond of the brothers for their relentlessness towards quality in all of its forms. The brand Ovadia & Sons is very much every aspect of their shared personalities. It’s an honest representation of both the life they live and the one the desire for. I’m constantly impressed with their commitment and taste level.

Not long ago I went by the new Ovadia showroom to look through the fall collection and I was inspired by not only the clothes, but the look of the showroom and their office. I knew it was a great opportunity to not only talk about the brand for the first time on ACL, but it was also the perfect chance to showcase the Ovadia office in one of my longest running and favorite features: From the Desk of…

In addition to showing the workspace of these two creative men, there’s also a nice snapshot of their brand showroom and production office. One of the reasons I started ACL in the first place (way back when in 2007) was to show where things come from, and look behind the scenes of the creative folks that inspire us all. An afternoon with Ariel and Shimon Ovadia does all of that and a little more.

Charlie Gup on July 14, 2013 10:38 AM:

What is fresh, interesting, or new about this brand ? Another animal head on the wall, vintage inspired showroom? Haven’t we seen it all before ?

Matthew Pike on July 14, 2013 10:44 AM:

I’m new to these guys but it’s all looking and feeling great. A fan of old Mickey is a fan of mine.

    Bobe on July 14, 2013 1:30 PM:

Cool space! Definitely doesn’t look vintage to me Charlie Gup. Those are just inspiration boards.

    gabe on July 15, 2013 7:32 AM:

agree with “Charlie Gup”. other than fun shots of the two brothers as kids to tug at the nostalgic heartstrings, this place looks like any other contemporary/trendy mens’ work studio at the moment right down to the inspiration boards.

    Bateman233 on July 15, 2013 12:46 PM:

Agree with Charlie, nothing new here….yawn…On another note, their suits have a really strange fit.

    Iván on July 15, 2013 3:41 PM:

Not everyone has the necessary taste to appreciate the talent of the Ovadia brothers.

    JWR on July 16, 2013 12:46 PM:

It’s too bad that the brothers apparently spent a lot of time working on fit — it is skintight, unflattering, and feminine. (Both for their own collection and for Press, which I understand has not been a success.) They, like Michael Bastian, showed a lot of early promise, until choosing trend over longevity. It’s a disappointment because they’re clearly talented designers who probably have a lot to offer beyond making products aimed primarily at getting likes on tumblr.

    McCoy on July 16, 2013 8:13 PM:

I don’t know an awful lot about these guys but I’m a fan. I do know its great to see people doing interesting things.
JWR – Im going to have to disagree with you on the fit…Have you tried or own any of their items? I happen to have about 6 pair of pants from them and a few shirts and the fit is perfection and the clothing in the store seems anything but “trendy” in my humble opinion.

    Bateman233 on July 17, 2013 3:11 PM:

@McCoy: Just purchased one of their suits. I am about as standard as you can be when it comes to size, 40R 32″ waist 6′ 1″ height ect ect…The suit has a really uncomfortable fit and this even after my tailor made all the adjustments he could. The pants are for men with abnormally small “junk”. If you have an average “junk” size it will be bulging out of the pants, even after tailoring.

Bateman233 — This thread of comments is getting painful. Perhaps you should direct this back to StyleForum?

Pete Gayed on July 21, 2013 3:25 PM:

Ooooooo, JPress pins — me wants.

    Rye on August 6, 2013 5:17 PM:

Do we really need another Ralph Lauren? Literally!
