To say that bicycles are ubiquitous in Copenhagen would be an understatement –bicycles there are a way of life. Over the past few years I have followed a few Copenhagen -based cycling centric blogs and their images helped to further provoke my own relationship with cycling. One thing everyone says in Copenhagen (and Amsterdam for that matter) is that people get their bikes stolen very frequently –most say it happens with regularity once a year. Living in NYC, this is something I can certainly appreciate, and fear.
All of this bicycle thievery makes the idea of spending a lot of money on a bicycle a frightening proposition, but it hasn’t slowed down Copenhagen’s Cykelmageren even the slightest bit.
A smallish shop, the company custom makes beautiful bicycles entirely by hand, one at a time in its workshop on the edge of town. You can choose from a few different models, from a gentleman style (which is a lot like many of the bikes on the streets of Copenhagen), a simplified sport bike with a forward leaning stance and a racing bike. You can also have a custom bike made just for you, with no limit to the amount of special features and details.
Everything you see at the shop on Kongensgade street is intriguing and beautifully designed. When I was there I my mind was racing with possible combinations and customizations. The bikes are so good looking you could hang them as art, and considering the price and the propensity for bike theft, that might just be the perfect place for them.
I still have pictures of the rows of bicycles lining the streets of Copenhagen from a visit years ago. While in Copenhagen on that same trip I was on foot, but my bicycle was in fact stolen from a lock up in Oslo-different city, same means of transportation/ bicycle theft problem.

i know that bicycles are a part of everyday like in asian countries such as china as well and people regularly get them stolen so one rarely buys a nice one. also, it’s convenient for lands that are pretty much level everywhere, the bikes mostly sold are all one gear

Beautiful bikes. Right up my alley. The gray one hanging up with a belt drive would be a sweet urban ride. With bike culture on the rise, a worthy endeavor would be a theft-proof bike.
Cykelmageren defiantly looks stunning, and makes you believe that it’s the place to get quality bikes.
However I was proven wrong 3 years ago after purchasing a bike in their shop, I’ve had nothing but trouble with it, and with the price tag that came with it, I would’ve suppose I got more than just a good looking bike.
Frankly, when it comes to bikes, buy old ones! If they’ve lasted the first 40 years they’ll probably last the next 20 as well!!
