In the Shop | Stanley & Sons SS13

Stanley & Sons is an easy thing to like. I’ve been a fan since my first encounter a few years back. There’s a certain aesthetic correctness to everything they do – from the art direction of the website to the physical products – that I have always appreciated. The tiny company operates out of a basement space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn that serves as showroom, factory and head office all in one. Enter through the hatch in the sidewalk and walk to the back, you can’t miss ’em. I stopped by last Friday to see the new SS13 collection and to see what Stanley & Sons has been up lately.

There’s been a refocusing of sorts at Stanley & Sons over the last few months. Chris Grodzki, who founded the company after being inspired by his grandfather who operated a similar concern on 2nd Ave for years, told me the reception to the new bags, colors and materials has been overwhelmingly positive. Prior to the SS13 offerings, S&S did the best it could but introduced designs sort of haphazardly. This season however, things are more scheduled and the collection is much more of a complete package. Things are changing for several reasons: to better define the brand and to help grow the business. That said, Chris and his girlfriend Lindsay (who works hand-in-hand with Chris and dreamt up that good looking woven leather tote) are mostly concerned with making quality stuff and staying true to the original passion that got them to this juncture.

Stopping by the workshop on a very hot Friday afternoon, it is easy to see how much passion for product can drive things. It’s obviously not the only thing, but it goes a long way and seems to be easily absorbed into both product and end user.

I have to agree with steve. Beautiful stuff, but way too much money.

Beautiful. I like the combination of aprons and bags. And it isn’t expensive at all.
It’s all handmade. Consider the amount of work, especially the leather. You will always pay a lot more than wholesale products. If this was coming from a world wide famous design house, think about what the price would be, I guess 3 times more then what they ask for it.
