There’s a sign outside of one of my favorite restaurants in New York that justifies its quirky existence with the following statement: “You either get it or you don’t.” I think the same can be said for Massimo Piombo’s new MP by Massimo Piombo collection. It is probably safe to say that many an ACL reader is not going to be up for the quirkiness or price tag of this new line. It is also presumable to consider that I would not be pulling these rigs verbatim, but the spirit of Piombo will certainly be my guide, and I am definitely a believer in Mr. Piombo when it comes to clothing.
Not content with having one beautifully made and insanely designed collection, Piombo got together with a little Neapolitan brand called Kiton to launch this new high-end label. The fabrics included in the range are sourced from all over the world, from Shetland to Nepal, the clothing is made almost entirely by hand (by Kiton) in Italy, and there is no chance of missing the fact that the color stories patterns are distinctly Piombo.
The line covers all of the bases – it consists of tailored clothing, jackets, knits, wovens and accessories. The price points are about what you would envision them to be with a company like Kiton involved. You can expect to see MP by Massimo Piombo in stores this coming fall at Barneys New York, a store who certainly gets it.

The deep textures and color juxtaposition are stunning as usual from Piombo. I particularly love the deep orange and dark brown jacket at the front of lot four. The detail is exquisite and though like many of Piombo’s creations in terms of surprising color pallet, I can imagine wearing everything in this collection. Thank you for letting us in on it.

Piombo is something I’ve recently gotten into and the stuff is pretty nice. Be warned however, if purchasing from the net, that you may need to size up 1. Maybe just me, althought I’m a dead on 48 with all other Italian designers, I’m wearing a 50 in Piombo. Perhaps the author of this article can confirm the same?

Especially the top photo, with the orange and black tie, tweed overcoat, black & white hat and striped scarf show a bold and outrageous confidence in a superbly tailored way. It is so old man looking, so out-of-the-closet of a 1970s era, Upper West Side, cultured and educated and well-traveled gentleman….. that it looks new again. I imagine these clothes hanging in Roman Castevet’s apartment closet at The Dakota.
