As it Happened | Côte d’Azur

Work had me in Europe for meetings and I tacked on a few days of R&R in the South of France, one of my favorite places in the world. All photos with the Fujifilm X100 + some post production.

I always wanted a Citroen Mehari. Luckily I never bought one because they are made of plastic and crack. Tant pis.

    giacomo on June 14, 2011 7:36 AM:

If you go to Nice there’s a fantastic vintage eyewear shop! I don’t remember the name but it’s very easy to find, it’s in the old town

    Fjorder on June 14, 2011 9:08 AM:

Why no snaps of the international riff-raff, who are thick on the ground at this time of year?

    cabwaylingo on June 14, 2011 10:25 AM:

    Mister Williams..

Would you say the Fujifilm X100 is worth the 1K+ price tag…I’ve had my eyes on this item for awhile now.

Hopping Frog on June 14, 2011 11:45 AM:

Ok, so where did you score the Steve McQueen Edition Persols? Can’t find the new ones anywhere in the US.

Michael Williams on June 14, 2011 12:01 PM:

I bought those Steve McQueen Persols at Bloomingdale’s in SoHo. #forreal

100% manual. Automatic mode is kind of a joke anyway. She’s a beast that X100, definitely takes some getting used to. Maybe that is just the case for me though because I am a self taught photographer. I’d pay 1K+ any day. I didn’t even bring my 5D this trip.

    Fjorder on June 14, 2011 1:27 PM:

thanks Michael… I shoot w/ the G10 and she’s a beast but I concur that the X100 is a step above in the compact SLR category.

rufus firefly on June 14, 2011 1:44 PM:

    Nice flicks, love the blog.
Just out of curiosity what line of work are you in? Must have major pennys.

Beautful pictures; some old movies are flashing through my mind!

    Fred on June 14, 2011 10:30 PM:

While it is Nice … I was surprised at the rocky beaches… like, not pebbles, but rocks. Just wasn’t expecting that. But I WAS expecting topless women and I was not disappointed … woot !

    Wonder on June 15, 2011 12:51 AM:

I wish to go to Europe one day. Looks beautiful.

Home!!! That post made my day. I have been away from the Cote d’Azur since 2000. I was born and grown up there… When I see that post, I can tell you, I miss it badly.

    RuLC on June 15, 2011 10:57 AM:

It’s been about a year since I’ve been there. I’ll tell you, I was surprised by Nice. I always thought that it was this “French Riveria” / high society place but it really didn’t hold up to the expectation. Some of the locals told me that the place has been overrun by Russian tourists and it’s not quite as it used to be. Still though, good food, a great farmer’s market, and that water – man, is it BLUE. Hope you could head over to Monaco while you’re there.

    Amatourist on June 15, 2011 12:06 PM:

you and my mother, in the exact same place taking shockingly similar envy-inducing photos. and here i sit… at the desk. thanks for temporary the escape…

    larsd4 on June 15, 2011 12:14 PM:

Michael, the closeup photo of the boats just cost me $1200. Must. Have. X100. Spectacular photo.

    DY on June 15, 2011 1:59 PM:

Wow. Those images are breathtakingly beautiful.
I want to go to that.

J’ adore the south of France – and we can catch the Eurostar train from London to Avignon in summer, which is nice and easy.

    I love the Persols.

    2buttonswag on June 15, 2011 9:28 PM:

The pictures are absolutely amazing. Again, it’s that reach out and touch it feel. I know nobody can see, but I’m scolding my camera letting it know it will never stack up to what is on this page. I also have a sudden urge to swim and eat a massive quantity of lemons.

    2buttonswag on June 15, 2011 9:33 PM:

After I look at the photos, if I close my eyes for a moment………………I still know I’m sitting in my computer chair and it just pisses me off that I’m not in France.

The Trad on June 16, 2011 2:23 PM:

Nice pix. How much do you make a year? Do you rent or own? Will you be out of town long? What’s your address? Is there a loading dock?

    Veronica on June 17, 2011 4:07 AM:

I hate that you get to go to the Cote d’azur with the x100!!!!! :P The colors and clarity of the camera (AND your post-processing :) are just SO ………. *sigh P.S. as you can see, I am only fawning over the camera. P.P.S. great post!
