The folks at Three Potato Four had a barn sale this weekend and a few friends and I decided to take the trip down to Philadelphia for the day to check things out. Husband and wife team Stu and Janet Morales started Three Potato Four as an online only shop in 2007. They opened their physical store last August and started doing the barn sales this past January. The “barn” is an awesome old brick building that used to be the dye room in an old wool mill. The internal structure looks to be composed of both brick and some weathered old wood with a bunch of windows at the top. The windows provide for a lot of great natural light, the kind of natural light that those of us that live in Manhattan don’t often get to enjoy. The contents of the barn consist of a bunch of old awesome stuff that must have been culled from farms and old factories and junk drawers all over the U.S.
Stu and Janet have amassed a cool selection of old stuff and some pretty neat reproduction new stuff in the barn. As we looked around I couldn’t help taking a second to marvel at the room. The barn is an awesome space, something that could probably only exsist in New York at mind blowing prices (read: Paula Rubenstein), or at least at prices you probably don’t want to pay. The barn is worth a two hour drive even if you aren’t in the market for an old table or some new old stuff. And if you live in Philly, even better. Keep an eye on the website for the next sale. Reminds me that I need to go down and browse my local haunt like this. Last time I was there I found an absolute jewel.
The Barn is very cool. I need to close on Saturdays, and start going out in the country for yard sales.
Great space and better stuff. You know that feeling when you find something super amazing at a flea market or a yard sale and you decide not to get it for some stupid reason…and later in the day you are kicking yourself because you should have bought it. Well, all that stuff magically goes to 3potato4 for safe keeping. Totally worth the trip.

Thanks for covering this. I was curious about 3P4’s barn sales. They def. have a great eye and their presentation of their merch. is fantastic. Space looks great too. Curious if the stuff is priced to move at the barn sales.

If you are willing to go a little farther south, a great place to browse here in Baltimore is Housewerks. Prices are great, and it is all housed in the greatest old gas valve building.
Funny how there is that little bit of “Germania” between them – pic 12 shows some educational wall graphics in my mother tongue. Reminds me very much of a similar place near here, where I have seen one or another piece of American heritage.. although that place is way more cluttered and not sure if it sells anything.. but great, still.

My wife took our Macbook to the Mac store a few years back to get the hard drive looked at (after it crashed a second time) and the “genius” gave a serious recommendation of trying to sell it to a museum. I though the comment was a little cheeky considering it was only 4 or 5 years old. Needless to say my wife was humiliated and we got a new computer.
Looks like our basement sans cobwebs. Would love to have their building.
