Required Reading | Esquire’s Big Black Book Fall 2010

Another reason to love autumn, all of the great fall style coverage in the magazines. Low and behold, the new Esquire Big Black Book has just been released and Mr. Nick Sullivan & company continue to impress. The new fall 2010 issue features an enjoyable 190 pages of gentlemanly style and service. It includes everything from a story on classic coats, to a breakdown of the different varietals of sheep and their particular wool (do not scoff, knowledge of such matters is important), pictures of Alex Carleton on a boat, Alex Calderwood’s thoughts on Tokyo at Christmas time and the Big Black (purple) Book includes a photo essay of Billy Reid on-the-hunt down south. Plus, lots of suits, watches, socks, boots, bags and denim. It even has a photo Esquire.com Style Editor Josh Peskowitz in a scratchy wool turtleneck and captain’s hat – about to trade his keyboard and G11 for a lobster pot. Basically, the Big Black Book will be the best $10 you spend all month.

I think I recognize that guy in the bottom right. Yep, its American badass Audwin McGee.

Even before I read your comment about McGee, I said “Hey, it’s that guy”.

    Dick on September 30, 2010 4:20 PM:

Does anyone know where to buy this? Can’t seem to find it after a googling…

    Turling on September 30, 2010 4:32 PM:

Doesn’t seem to be on sale, yet. At least not on Esquire’s website. We’re all not as special as Michael.

mat buckets on September 30, 2010 4:42 PM:

Dandux Himself on September 30, 2010 5:11 PM:

I once had a dream that I was Audwin McGee. I killed a guy. There was celebration and merriment.

    Speedmaster on September 30, 2010 5:34 PM:

    ethan-T on September 30, 2010 9:27 PM:

just got my copy at Barnes & Noble

    Rob on September 30, 2010 10:25 PM:

might have to pick up a copy. Esquire’s seasonal style mags seem to be one of the more approachable/realistic resources for menswear in the market. props to Mr. Sullivans and his team.

    D. Buckner on October 1, 2010 7:14 AM:

It’s gratifying that being a man is lapsing back into vouge.
I will be adding this well done Esquire copy to my read queue.

Thomas Crown on October 1, 2010 9:26 AM:

You can purchase this publication at any area bookstore Barnes and Noble, Borders etc. I’ve been getting them since the first edition and they do come in handy as a reference guide. The style of dressing is classic and the clothing featued is outstanding.

nick sullivan on October 1, 2010 10:40 AM:

Hey Mat Buckets. Try a Barnes and Noble UK branch. Some friends picked up last edition from a couple of branches i think Birmingham and London.

    Rob R on October 1, 2010 11:03 AM:

I look forward to the Black Book every Fall and Spring – it’s undoubtedly in a class by itself, always beautifully edited, designed and produced. Nick, you’re out there keeping up with the ACL comments, please accept my and our thanks. You do a fantastic job every season.

    Makaga on October 1, 2010 1:09 PM:

I picked up my copy for the ride home last night.
Sitting at my desk here alongside the ‘orange’ issue from earlier this year.
…Really enjoyed the article on the tweed ride. Think we need something like that in NYC.

Josh Peskowitz on October 1, 2010 2:04 PM:

Off to Books A Million this afternoon.

    JMA on October 1, 2010 4:01 PM:

I bought last year’s version. It had a few good articles. Tons of ads. Many high-priced items like $15K Piaget watches, and a carbon fiber cell phone for $16K!. Andre Benjamin telling me to wear a hat, and that he doesn’t like new shoes.

The Dude on October 2, 2010 1:14 AM:

The Esquire BBB is always a good read. On a similar note, check out GQ’s new Style Manual:

    TMH on October 3, 2010 2:47 PM:

I like this issue even more than the previous issue(which i liked a lot and saved)

    beckstein on October 3, 2010 6:31 PM:

each black book seems pretty much the same.

    TMH on October 3, 2010 7:03 PM:

@Beckstein, Take a look at this one. I thinks its better than the last.
In fact, I’ve enjoyed reading Esquire again after letting my subscription
lapse a few years ago. The impossible issue was really good
And i clipped a few of the “how to’s” and have them in my notebook

    doane on October 3, 2010 10:20 PM:

The illustrations are the best part.

    lance on October 4, 2010 6:28 PM:

    cuz you fancy – huh…?

    Isaac on October 13, 2010 10:18 PM:

I have to say, I was really disappointed with this. I bought it on your recommendation, and I felt it fell really flat. Not enough substance, way too many ads. Also, they could’ve expanded their brand profiles to more new players.

The common (and rightful) complaint with GW/Esquire, etc, is that they have nothing new to say. This issue reinforced it for me.

    Mike D on October 14, 2010 4:05 PM:

    $10 + $1000 in gear I will feel required to own…damnit.

    Matto on October 23, 2010 4:27 AM:

Anyone knows where to get this in Sweden?
