Extra Good Vintage

Tucked at the end of Extra Place – an alley off of Bowery – sits New York’s coolest new shop Extra. If you don’t take care and pay special attention the shop can be difficult to find, but it is certainly worth it. To be honest, when I saw the address for the first time I didn’t even think it was in Manhattan. The shop’s proprietor is a very nice man named Koji Kusakabe who’s a long time (and much respected) vintage hunter. This fact becomes very obvious when you step foot in the modest space and see all of the treasures that are on offer. In addition to a whole host of vintage gems and collectibles, Koji stocks new goods from Engineered Garments and Post Overalls. The man has a knack for vintage and workwear, it’s a beautiful thing.

The back door of the Varvatos-infested-CBGB’s literally opens out onto Extra Place and one can only imagine what must have gone on there back in the day. That alley the must have been a real shit-hole back when New York was mean. Extra reminds me a lot of the types of places you would find in Japan. Tokyo is full of those small, sort of hidden and difficult to find little shops that are so much fun when you actually find them. And thus is the case with Extra, worth the hunt. Thanks to Eric for the heads up.

The bottle cap chain is fantastic. Plenty of time and effort to piece it together.

I would like to be able to navigate these slideshows using the left and right arrows or the ‘p’ and ‘n’ keys, not just by clicking the forward arrow icon.

I like the video a lot. I like how excited Mr. Kusakabe is to share his stuff.

Nice shop. Doesn’t look overstuffed with product like a lot of vintage shops.

Love the Vornado Fan! I’ve been searching for a new workshop/office space. One space I looked at had a working Vornado fan just like the one pictured, left behind in the corner. The fan pretty much sealed the deal for me. I move in tomorrow.
