Sweet Smell of Success Revisted

Soon after getting hired by J. Press to do their public relations in 2005, I went by the store on 44th Street to introduce myself to the manager and the salesmen there. I got a chance to meet some of the old timers and so began the relationship with one of my most memorable clients. One particularly entertaining salesman – a gent named David Wilder, (who actually still works in the New York store) – was always amusing. When I introduced myself to David as the new PR guy he says to me: “Just like Sidney Falco” and I couldn’t help but to laugh. Only at J. Press would someone make that connection. Over the two and a half years I worked with J. Press David also famously (in my mind) said that “21 Club is the J. Press of restaurants” and that “Mad Men was the J. Press of TV shows.”

As far as movies about publicists go, 1957 picture Sweet Smell of Success is my all time favorite. Tony Curtis and Burt Lancaster are really fantastic. The film was actually one of the very first posts on ACL, way back when I really had no idea what I was doing with this (not that I do now). I don’t always like The Trad’s movie choices, but I have to agree with John on this one, Sweet Smell of Success is a great film with some excellent one liners. I guess “The cat’s in a bag and the bag’s in a river.”

Looks like quite the treasure. I love old movies but generally only know of really famous ones like “Roman Holiday” and “Rebel Without a Cause”. I’ll have to check this one out. Thanks!

This is one of my all-time favorite films, and even though I love it I’ve also been itching for years for Hollywood to remake it. I even casted George Clooney as Hunsecker and Christian Slater as Falco…. don’t ask

Top 5 favorite movies of all time. Arguably best movie ending ever — orchestral crescendo is priceless. Michael, roll with Lancaster right into The Swimmer — complete with John Cheever cameo. Perfect heading into spring/summer…

Hey, Lump. What’s wrong with my movies?

This is one of the great movies, endlessly quotable dialogue but it does have one flaw. Martin “Adam 12” Millner as Jazz Guitarist! It’s absurd. SCTV could not have done better. Other that that it’s still a great movie. Oh, speaking of movies I just watched “A Serious Man”. Nice clothes throughout the film.

I’m a PR guy. If someone called me a “Sidney Falco Guy” I’d smack him right in the mouth.

One of my favorite movies ever…
