The Goodness That is Black Oxford

Allow me to point your attention to the newest collaboration item that just landed in the ACL Shop. I’m the type of guy that wears oxford cloth as much as possible, so the more I spoke to Steven Alan about doing a project together the more obvious it became that we had to collaborate on an oxford shirt. Steven and I met near his TriBeCa office at Le Colombe on Church Street a few times to discuss what eventually became two co-labeled shirts done expressly for ACL & Co. The shirts combine two of my favorite things: the Steven Alan Single Needle style shirt with a little flap-pocket detail that has become known as my calling card (at least I like to think so). Basically, I had the opportunity to creative my perfect woven shirt, and I have been wearing one of these shirts (either in black or white) since the goods arrived at the office. The way I see it, if no one ever buys them I’ll be all set in the oxford department for the foreseeable future.

Very exciting news! And I don’t think you’ll have to worry too much about overstock… – TFI

fantastic shirt, looks like i might be putting another order in! the shop is really turning into something great!

    cws on January 26, 2010 4:01 PM:

Will rush to buy one or two…especially at $168…a steal…

    Paul on January 26, 2010 4:43 PM:

I saw these shirts earlier today on another post and thought — hey ACL!!! Good. Would love to wear one, but need to figure out how to wear this in a rig without looking like the pastor of my church. Otherwise I may be mistaken for the clergy and hear confessions – which, as I think about could lead to some interesting entertainment.

Remember when this website was a blog and not a store?

When it was about an idea, rather than overt marketing?

    David on January 26, 2010 4:49 PM:

I just picked one up. Downsized from my normal medium to a small. I noticed the shirt seems to run a little large (based on Steve Alan’s site). I hope it fits right!

It’s nice to see oxford cloth in dark colors. I picked up about six yards of oxford cloth in a good bitter chocolate brown. No idea what I’ll do with it, but I couldn’t pass it up. Do you suppose there is such a thing as a steampunk OCBD?

    witz.org on January 26, 2010 10:58 PM:

    Awesome. Nice!

    Cale on January 26, 2010 11:40 PM:

Wow.. Love the shirt. I’m going to grab a Black and a White in a Large….along with #9..

    Love the site man!!!

    Brandon on January 27, 2010 12:35 AM:

Michael, is the chart measured dimensions of the shirt, or recommended size to fit? I find that shirt collars frequently do not accurately refer. What is the drop on the shirt, if you have a dimension for that?

    twoShay on January 27, 2010 12:40 AM:

What does this shirt have to offer that I won’t be getting if I instead choose to buy 4 L.L. Bean oxfords for the price of one of these? Especially when the Bean shirts come in a total of 48 sizes.

    chuck on January 27, 2010 2:40 AM:

i must agree – i adored this site when it wasnt tied directly to your own commerce initiative – i am all for making a clean livin – doesnt change fact that it had different feel.

    mark on January 27, 2010 4:39 AM:

People need to stop bitching, everyone needs to make a living, i think he at least deserves something for all his hard work.

People like michael are changing this clothing game, it thrives off passions and individuality. You need to get used to this sort of thing, because you will see it more and more as time goes on.

another mark on January 27, 2010 9:14 AM:

“changing the clothing game”? that made me cringe more than, “with a little flap-pocket detail that has become known as my calling card (at least I like to think so)”.

this site used to be interesting and informative. now it’s a catalog masquerading itself as a blog.

    Brad on January 27, 2010 9:55 AM:

I have to agree with Another Mark.
The ‘calling card’ remark made me shake my head, as did Mark’s ‘changing the clothing game’.
    Just sayin’.

Trip English on January 27, 2010 10:16 AM:

Michael just can’t win!!! How can someone be lauded for their passion about a particular set of subjects and then get catch hell when they decide to start participating and add something of their own to the canon. Great work Michael!

    Jim on January 27, 2010 10:38 AM:

You should know my now that these are the guys who get laid a lot. Everyone (real people not in this little subscene) just thinks we’re a bunch of pretentious poofs who care way too much about fashion.

Been looking for a black shirt that doesn’t make me look like a square toe wearing douche fresh out of Express.

    derek on January 27, 2010 11:37 AM:

Wait, so having a pocket on the chest of your shirt is all of the sudden “very ACL”?
You seriously must have your head up your ass.

Dennis Cahlo on January 27, 2010 11:41 AM:

    Michael,

I commend you on your efforts to expand your blog as a brand and it is inspiring me to do the same.

Where I do not often agree with your price points, I love the fact that you are offering quality products based on the classics you love. That, in itself, has to be one of the most rewarding things you can offer your readers besides afantastic line of products.

Keep up the shop, the blog, and the inspiration.

    Best,
    Dennis Cahlo

    NW on January 27, 2010 11:58 AM:

    Jim
    Are you serious?
You wish you were as interesting as a bunch of ‘pretentious poofs’- who most likely have better style and get laid more than the ‘subscene’ regulars.

    fsr on January 27, 2010 12:56 PM:

    great looking shirt.

btw – NW, remember what they say – if you are slinging homophobic remarks around so casually, it usually means you are. why are you so concerned with the sex other men are having?

    Brohammas on January 27, 2010 1:17 PM:

Black Oxfords? There is irony here right?
kidding aside, a nice black shirt is a slightly aging man’s best friend.

    NW on January 27, 2010 1:21 PM:

fsr-read back-I was actually re-quoting Jim’s comment-which I thought was slinging around a homophobic remark casually and also straight up ridiculous in its statement about blog daddy’s getting ‘laid a lot’. The only sex I’m concerned about is the sex we could all be having more of if we spent less time on the computer reading meaningless blogs, myself included-gotta go!

    sam on January 27, 2010 1:58 PM:

im the first to call bullshit on something but i think michael does the store thing rather tastefully and not overt. he’s collaborating with some top names, he’s doing slight variations on solid pieces, and he’s charging what the other items usually sell for.

if this blog is 85% content and 15% sales, then whats wrong with that?

that being said, the ‘calling card’ comment made me puke up a little bit.

    Sean on January 27, 2010 2:18 PM:

Looking forward to see what you guys bring to the table, once you finish up hiding behind those keyboards.

Dr Feelgood on January 27, 2010 2:27 PM:

sam — I think people are calling bullshit on this blog becoming 85% sales/pr and 15% content.

    “blog becoming 85% sales/pr and 15% content”

Doctor – want to back that statement up? Because I can count back at least 12 posts before there was anything referring to sales/pr….

    CTP on January 27, 2010 2:35 PM:

if nothing else, props to mikey for publishing all the comments – not many bloggers have the balls to not censor.

    HB on January 27, 2010 3:32 PM:

love the blog, I just can’t unass 168 smokes for a shirt no matter how nice it is.

x2 on having the balls to take the negative comments and post them!

    Chal on January 27, 2010 4:10 PM:

Finally, another “right” black shirt. They remind me of Agnes B. shirts, which I like for their fit and fabric– but the AB prices have become off-putting for casual shirts. Well done.

    Bitch&Moan on January 27, 2010 4:18 PM:

    To ALL of you: Seriously?

    Hats off Williams.

    mark on January 27, 2010 4:20 PM:

i bet they are loving the comment count here though…

    Jon on January 27, 2010 4:30 PM:

    Quote from the Times Article:
In the latter: a stark color scheme that’s a departure from the vintagey, workwear-inspired aesthetic you’d expect from these two.

That, according to Williams, is intentional. “Some of this Americana stuff has been exhausted, and it’s not fun anymore,” says the Cleveland native. “More than anything, this is sort of hitting the reset button. I don’t want to wear buffalo plaid anymore.” Plus, he adds, “Steven hadn’t done black before. And I think black oxford is pretty gangster.”

This blog became popular because of the inherent interest in Americana. Michael Williams did not make Americana popular. Michael Williams cannot “hit the reset button” on the history, culture, and style of a country.

That said, the black oxford is hot.

    Sebastian on January 27, 2010 4:37 PM:

I think this discussion shows how poorly brands/companies are perceived in this country. There is long grown distrust, because companies have been screwing over consumers for decades, which now ACL is suffering from.

To all you haters – what has another company done for you lately, other than to push their products on them? ACL is giving so much more than their wares. If you don’t see this, you’re stupid. And if you don’t like the price tag – shop somewhere else.

    SK

    Jason on January 27, 2010 5:36 PM:

what the fuck you supposed to wear a black oxford with?!

    Jim on January 27, 2010 6:04 PM:

Rock that black oxford with your selvage denim, and if you want to roll with a serious “F You!”, wear an Indy boot. Uh huh, brown.

    M on January 27, 2010 6:41 PM:

It’s clear from reading this site that the blogger has a direct financial interest in many of the posts, and probably at least an indirect interest in most. Some of it is implicitly revealed, some is more hidden. I imagine that the blogger would agree, but say that he only rolls out products that he stands by. In that sense, it’s no different from a good small business owner — the difference is that business owners have stores that show their commercial agenda, whereas bloggers are far less open about their affiliations. But such is the state of the internet — when you google any product you can be sure that half the things you read about it are planted by entities with undisclosed interests. So long as you just take it all as advertising, not journalism (no different from GQ’s style content), it’s a pretty cool little site.

To that end, the above shirt is refreshing because it’s clearly identified as a co-branding effort. More power to the author.

    DinTX on January 27, 2010 7:28 PM:

i can’t shell out 168 for a shirt (but if i could i would get one of each) . That said, i would love to run a blog and turn it into a business – who would not?? Why not? are you people crazy. Mr W is doing what he loves and getting paid to do so. I think the haters should drop off and f off! keep up the good work ACL!

    Tuco on January 27, 2010 9:47 PM:

Except for the color I think the black oxford is great.

    JD on January 27, 2010 11:02 PM:

Unless any of you smack talkers have actually taken the time and effort to try and get things made and sell said items, and then realize how hard that can actually be, you should STFU.

Gary Drinkwater on January 28, 2010 7:35 AM:

    Michael,
Great colab! Down the road, it will be ones frayed favorite. Please don’t let the naysayer ruin your party. If they only knew the effort that it takes to bring product to fruition and then the time in which it takes to retail it. Two great names on the label constitutes the price above the fact that you most likely used a terrific fabric and flawless construction.
    Good luck.

    T. Pink on January 28, 2010 3:19 PM:

No gussets on the side seams? Missed opportunity. That would have been the shit right there.

Don Weir on January 29, 2010 4:35 PM:

Sucks that a guy loves what he does for a living, spends his valued time giving everyone some killer material to read / discover, puts together amazing collaborations with great American companies, and a bunch of bitter punks bash him for doing so. What a joke. More power to you Michael.

    David on January 29, 2010 4:57 PM:

I’ve actually been dying for a black oxford ever since I saw the one Band of Outsiders did about six months ago. I actually love black shirts, and can certainly see how someone could pull this shirt off. I could even see this becoming a regular favorite. Did I mention I love black?

    My personal gameplan:
    – Chrome Oakley Frogskins
    – ACL X Steven Alan Black Oxford
    – Selvedge denim
    – Generic Man naval shoes in grey canvas
    – Grey chambray scarf from The Hill-Side

    Chris on January 29, 2010 4:57 PM:

You gotta be kidding me with these comments. Capitalism is probably the MOST American thing about the site.

Most of you are just pissed that Michael had the balls and skill set to think of this idea before you…I know I am!

That said, keep up the always fascinating work and sell away!

    plista on January 30, 2010 12:40 AM:

ACL x SA sounds good to me. I mean, a black oxford. Yes, thank you. But, seeing the blog evolve/devolve to shop (i.e. commercial concerns) AND inanities like “a little flap-pocket detail that has become known as my calling card” (i.e. ergo ego) makes me slightly worried.

    bbb on January 30, 2010 9:00 AM:

Michael doesn’t elaborate enough in the description, so it came as a pleasant surprise to find that the quality is notably nicer than your typical Steven Alan shirt. This thing is tough as nails. And the fit, as usual, is impeccable. This may very well be my new best friend.

(but sorry, man, the calling card thing could’ve been worded a bit better. Just delete it or something so we can all forget? You can do that with the internet now, right?)

    unitedstyle on January 30, 2010 12:43 PM:

“Except for the color I think the black oxford is great.” That was hilarious. You should call the other color “faded black.”

I think Michael’s been pretty straight up about the intentions of the blog, especially since the redesign a few months ago. I think we’re all smart enough to know when any blogger is writing about something they found on their own and when they are in direct contact with the maker of the product.

I take things with a grain of salt and if I don’t like something or someone, I stop reading. The blog is still free to read, no one is forcing me to read, and I thank Michael and the other bloggers I read for taking the time and effort to supply me with a little entertainment each day.

Holy shit! Is that a black SINGLE NEEDLE oxford shirt with a FLAP POCKET! I came to this site cause I heard dude was changing the classic Americana game but this is almost too much. Man, I wish the Gap had the balls to make shirts as edgy as this.

Visionary stuff dude. You have replaced Nigo as my fashion hero.
