When I moved to New York I came here with the intention of spending about six months in the city and then heading to law school. That was nearly a decade ago and I live without regret. I would have either been an excellent, or a terrible attorney, most likely the latter. Even though I never got my J.D., I sure do like to watch me some Law & Order and the funny thing is along the way I found one of my style icons. When the opportunity arose to write for Antenna I knew exactly who I should tributize (as Mr. 3000 would say), one Jack McCoy. The Fall 09 Antenna is on newsstands soon, treat yourself to a copy.
Now that you write for Antenna maybe you can explain to them that a “buttondown shirt” means that the collar buttons down, not the front of the shirt. Every issue they’ve got two pages of “buttondown shirts” that aren’t buttondowns…drives me crazy.
I don’t own the magazine! Besides, my grammar is not the best in the world and the ACL copy writer went out for coffee and hasn’t come back in six months! ha! I think that “button down” is sort of common usage for a woven shirt with buttons. Okay, well as much as I like a Barbour over a suit, wear it myself unless I put on my Filson (now that I have established my cred) I gotta say that there are sooo many guys on these mean NYC streets with the Jack McCoy look, so I have trouble placing him as an icon, personally, as I think the wardrobe person on set was copying them rather than him introducing the style… unless their are more L&O fans than I thought….
But great site, I check in most days and have you to thank for a great USA made briefcase and finding other blogs to get thru the workday!

I remember reading that when you first posted it. The version I’d always heard was that Brooks actually had a “Polo” line way back when that Ralph ended up purchasing the rights to, they gave him all use of the word except for their OCBD. Thus the different label. Not sure if its true…Anyway tell those fools to start using the term woven shirts! Great piece
