You really have to take a serious look through the offerings over at the West Coast Americana themed pop-up One Trip Pass. Don’t just spend all your time shotgunning beers. In addition to all of the great vintage goods, the gents behind the shop are also offering a classic piece of California surf culture with their limited edition Kanvas by Katin surf trunks. One Trip Pass had the company make 24 pair of the throwback sixties trunks (made right here in the USA) exclusively for the pop-up shop. A little Katin background for all you East Coasters after the jump.
“In the late 1950’s Nancy and Walter Katin were in the business of making boat covers. In 1959 they were commissioned to produce a swim trunk that would stand up to the durability of California watermen. The swim trunks were a huge success and became the uniform for watermen worldwide. These trunks are produced with rigid fabric that is from the same fabric vendor that these trunks were produced with in the late 1950s and 60’s. The swim trunks are made from the original patterns from the 60’s.”
There are also rumors of a Katin heritage collection coming soon. If they manage to make it look as nice as this and make everything here in the states, I think it will be something really great. Fingers crossed.

They look super durable.
do you think they could withstand a shark bite?
Those shorts are awesome looking, a real throwback. However, I bet they take for ever to dry once you get out of the water. Give me a pair of red Birdwell Beach Britches made out of surfnyl anyday.
i agree i’m a bit more of a birdwell fan but these are pretty awesome
I too am a Birdwell fan…been surfing in them for a while now and they just fit, dry, and wear great. although it is cool to see Katin doing special editions such as this. I’ve been hoping Birdwell would do something like this for a while…the surfnyl is great fabric, but it’s not the true original. And the trunks have changed over the years; it’s be cool to see some re releases in original fabrics.
Although pricey and not made in the USA, Patagonia’s board shorts might be worth a look. Very functional and can take a beating.
Also, please do a post on wading jackets. They look very sharp. Patagonia has a stylish new version.

Great shorts whether you are in the water or not. They’re going fast so grab em up.
why such a small run? nothing against hype or limited editions but with something as classic as these, it would be nice to at least try on a pair outside of nyc.
