Mordechai Rubinstein is one of my all time favoite people in the city. Someone I continually look to for inspiration, Mordechai embodies New York cool. When I saw him at a little get together at the Hickey store last night I knew I had to flip-the-script on Mr. Mort and take some photos. Just a coincidence that Mordechai is wearing a Barbour coat like a previous Street Style photo that is now known as “The Aaron Levine Incident.” If you aren’t familiar with Mr. Rubinstein’s excellent blog, you have a lot of explaining to do. Perfection. My only question is are those Levi 501s? I know Mister Mort is a Levis guy but there is no way that can be a 501 unless he has them tailored.

I was at Mr Mort’s site the other day diggin’ the J Press bucket hat. I’m just deciding which material I should get.
Great classic style with a couple very smart twists.
I hope that’s his family crest on the ring and a relative’s monogram on the cuff though.

Jeff and JP are correct–that hem is not. This guy is dressed in the right way but everything is so on that the whole thing winds up being off. It’s forced.

If anything, the fact that his outfit was worn 20 years ago is a testament to its classic nature. I do think it looks a bit too ‘out of the box’ though; it would look better if the jeans and Barbour had a bit of wear on them.
great style. I like the casual jacket over the navy blazer. Beautiful shoes. And I also find his tie interesting, it’s not slim and not wide. and the monogram sleeve & green socks are a nice touch.
The hem is simply incorrect. And will look steadily worse as the jeans age. I predict they will be thrown away within a season or two (though I consider unhemmed cut-offs entirely kosher, and hope these jeans meet that fate instead). It isn’t that difficult to find a chain-stitch machine.
I agree the hem on the jeans are not the best. Also greens socks for St. Patricks Day? That’s a bit late. Nonetheless above the waist he looks like my dad on a Sunday morning or on the hunt in the British countryside. I’m British I see this everyday.
the jeans can be saved by simply opening up that bad hem and letting nature take its course.

You know I don’t like them hem, but that’s my opnion.
That’s what’s so great about Mort’s page, it’s a break from the groupsthink and cattiness that inhabits other sites. On it I can see tons of stylish people (often) wearing stuff I never would (and looking great in it).
I’ll add that just because someone wears something doesn’t mean they are claiming to have invented the look, or that it’s the height of fashion right now.
It’s tough to overcome, despite myself, I rarely wear my topsiders (favorite pair of shoes) anymore because I saw too many other people wearing them lately.

It’s impossible to be truly unique anymore, but Mort’s site come close (to me anyways).
The laws of sartorial gravity do not apply equally to all mortals. Mordechai inhabits a universe of his own making that depends not on a particular hem. It’s a privilege to bear witness.

The blind hem is very under utilized, especially on jeans, if at all. It looks great.

Mordechai ALWAYS looks great – but for my taste sometimes looks like he could use a roll in the dirt

if i saw this gent on the street he’d be worthy of a second look and certainly possesses a sense of personal style, which is more than most people on the street.
for my taste, the details are all wrong, excepting the tie (although even there, having a logo on the tie is pretty gauche). i really dislike the different stripe pattern on the shirt collar, the gold buttons on the blazer, and the corduroy collar on that coat. that coat just isn’t cool to me. i know that american basics are the “in” thing right now, but that corduroy collar on that run of the mill jacket is about as uncool as it gets. also, the blazer looks really blah — like a million others one sees at goodwill and passes over. it’s very long, has an extremely low gore, and the lapels are sort of rolled over in a cheap way. if seen without the overcoat, i can’t imagine it would look very sharp at all.
that said, the sum is more than the parts.
