LIFE Archive | Hunker Down

Nothing like a chair shortage to spark a nationwide squatting trend. That is exactly what happened in 1959 when a bunch of University of Arkansas fraternity brothers decided to make their chair-lacking displeasure known by “hunkerin‘” all over campus. The funny looking practice spread throughout Southern colleges and then eventually throughout the entire country. There is a nice little write up over at Ivy Style – who tipped me off to the whole hunkerin’ thing in the first place – which you can read here. More photos after the jump.

I like that white (wool) socks with the Bass Weejuns look! Need to bring that back. To this day, I still bring a sport jacket or blazer to work even if I’m wearing jeans or kakhis that day – it’s a good look I think.

Really? There’s a name for that? “Hunkering” sounds way cooler than “squatting”, I suppose. Too bad all those guys had knee surgery a few years ago.

    wow, this is so fascinatin!!

“respite from a world of turmoil. The main purpose of hunkerin’ is to get down and hunker together. It’s a friendship thing: get your friends to hunker with you. The man you don’t know is the man you haven’t hunkered with”

it’s like a much more egalitarian skull and bones, meant for the nimble of knee.

it foreshadowed the 70s craze of western meditation? really, like all it took for this american appropriation of eastern practices is for some college frat boys to kneel down and read a book? incredible.

Michael: I believe you did some hunkering yourself back in College…usually over an alcoholic beverage but I’m not sure what you were protesting

    JMA on April 25, 2009 12:13 AM:

This is still done in parts of Asia. Guys squatting so they don’t get their pants dirty.

    Dave on April 25, 2009 5:58 AM:

Really? Black shoes with white socks? Total faux pas. Some rules are meant to be adhered to.
