I’ve been meaning to post these photos from my top secret mission to Maine a little while back. The state has so much to offer even visiting for just two days and we met a lot of interesting people and saw some top notch Americana along the way. I was living the dream drinking the High Life, eating lobster and talkin’ shop. Check out my photos below.

Is Becky’s Diner in the city of Portland, or somewhere outside? I’m a sucker for collecting coffee mugs with diner names on them. Most places I’ve been to that have that end up giving me the mug for free (if I ask nicely). A few times I’ve had to buy them, but it’s still worth it.

Best looking store I’ve seen in quite a while. Has what so many retailers only hope to achieve…style, substance and most importantly…character. I can smell the salt water and wood right now…and it’s not sprayed from a bottle.

It doesn’t look like you left Portland at all. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but the city of Portland is hardly Maine. I lived there for many years and ate at Becky’s, drank at the Top of the East, etc., but wonder if you might have found something more resembling “Maine” if you stepped a bit further north.
Top picture is from Bar Harbor, gas station signs were from near Ellsworth, work wear store was in Brewer. Does any of that count Mainer?

It looks like you’re going to have to go back for another visit, because I don’t see that you managed to get your minimum daily requirement of doughnuts at either Tony’s in Portland, and Frosty’s in Brunswick.
Also, you seem to have missed Moody’s diner in Waldoboro (my old hangout.)

love your response to mainer. as a native mainer myself, i absolutely love portland as one fantastic piece of a fantastic state. disappointingly living in CT for the last 5 years, i yearn for a return to portland almost daily.

ahhh…I love Maine!
I grew up in Connecticut, but went to college in Maine. The state has this incredible effect on people, making even temporary residents like myself feel like Mainers at heart. I have encountered few places that have such a lasting impact on one’s sense of belonging.
Bethel, the amethyst mines near Songo Pond. More Maine. Mt. Zircon Ginger Ale — Ah, now that’s Maine. My Grandmother would load us up with homegrown peas and a couple of cases of ginger ale — good stuff – good memories.
Great post! I grew up in Maine. Now I’m out in Oakland. I miss Maine sometimes. Portland is anamazing city.
