My pal Mark and I spent the early part of the week on a top secret mission in Maine. Since we were driving through Portland, we took the opportunity to meet up with my buddy Jay Carroll from Rogues Gallery. Stories were told, oysters were eaten and beers were downed. Coastal Maine is lovely. Though I’ve never been there in calendar months 1-5, the video shows it seems no different.
I’m going to retire to there, and never leave, and have my grandchildren stay all summer long. Sadly, I have no plans to retire (ever) and have no grandchildren.

Just kidding. Maine still has raw New England everywhere. It gets WAY too cold in the winter to suffer from over popularity.

Charles — Maine actually does have a sprawl problem, cold weather notwithstanding. I lived in Brunswick (just north of Portland) for several years in the early 2000s. During that time, great swaths of pine forest in the Brunswick-Topsham area were replaced by housing developments. I’d be running along a beautiful trail that I’d known for years and suddenly pop out into a bright empty gash that smelled of pine pitch. It seemed to happen overnight. Depressing.

I believe it. I guess I was comparing Maine to the circus that is the Cape & Islands, where I was born and visit more often. I did spend a good amount of my tween summers in Scarborough in the early 90’s and try to make it up to the grandparent’s summer place in Rockport, which feels a lot more laid back in the warmer months than pretty much anywhere in coastal MA.
