Ah, the Stones. This was just as they were breaking away from their “Herman’s Hermit’s” comparisons.
Quick blog plug, but it’s amazing to see how different they were only four years later–http://andculture.blogspot.com/2009/02/stones-msg-1969.html.
Can you imagine any main-stream, successful band going through such a transformation nowadays?
Herman’s Hermit’s?? Uh, no. I can’t imagine anyone every comparing the two.
Believe it or not–according to Charlie himself, the two bands were initially compared quite often in ’64, particularly around the release of “England’s Newest Hitmakers.”
One of my favorite Stones cuts. Straight groove.
Those were some funky white boys. The southern blues is coming through in a big way. Under my thumb was basically an r&b track.
