Neil Young Live at the BBC c.1971 | A Continuous Lean.

Neil Young Live at the BBC c.1971

Jan 22nd, 2009 | Categories: Music, Video | by Michael Williams

I posted this video a while back on The Material Review, but since Neil Young is close to releasing his massive archive on Blu-Ray I figured it was worth reiterating here. It seems good old Neil likes to document things and has hundreds of hours of footage dating back to 1963. The Neil Young Archives comes in three separate parts of ten Blu-Rays per set. Volume 1 alone has a run time of 1200 minutes and covers the years 1963-1972. Fucking A that is crazy pants. At some point down the line Mr. Young will release Volume 2 (1973-1981) and then Volume 3 (1982-1988). So it will take 30 Blu-Rays to get you through 25 years of performances, music and interviews. Since the pure scope of this thing is insane, ownership is basically mandatory for all. It is unclear if this 1971 BBC performance will be included — so you should take a half hour and watch this now. God forbid you walk this earth having only seen 60 hours of Neil Young.

I guess by thinking you were early adopters I was wrong. I’m sure it will be out on DVD simultaneously with the HD version.

“Think I’ll pack it in and buy a pickup. Take it down to L.A.” Thanks for the heads up. This looks amazing. I have still yet to see the film ‘A Journey Through the Past’. Sort of the soundtrack to my youth.

It’s hard for me for to take seriously your regard for a legend like Neil when you’ve previously noted the ‘merit’ of Vampire Weekend.

I don’t know if this link still works (we can’t get into Youtube from the office) but this used to work…it’s Neil busking outside Glasgow Central Station sometime in the 70s.

As a follow up, check out the David Crosby & Graham Nash half hour show they recorded for the Beeb in 1969/70.. CSN&Y songs galore, and even two of ‘If I Could Only Remember My Name..”

I love how a couple of the “new songs” he does are Old Man and Heart of Gold. Can’t imagine what it’d be like sitting in the front row there hearing Heart of Gold for the first time like this. I’d probably need to go up there and hug that damn fool.
