Barbour Limited Edition Collection

With men’s market week going on in NYC, a lot of people are in town and much is happening on the news front. On Tuesday I had a chance to meet up with the gentlemen from Beams+ for cocktails at White Star. Once the Absinthe arrived we quickly got down to talking shop. Seeing as Beams+ is my favorite store on earth, I take their recommendations seriously. One of the things that came up is a new limited edition line from the esteemed UK brand Barbour. The eight piece outerwear collection – designed by Japan’s To Ki To – is a hybrid of classic Barbour from the brand’s archives and modern technical outerwear. I took some time at the Collective trade show to investigate further. After coaxing the Barbour people to show me the line I was blown away by the collection.

A few things to point out. The line will be available in the U.S. this coming fall – which is great news. The bicycle jacket is pretty much the best cycling jacket I personally have ever seen. I will be owning that, for sure. In fact, the entire collection is one of the best things I have seen in a very long time. The range will only be available a select specialty stores, so if you want to carry the collection you had better get on it.

Any idea on the price points?

Tyler "Fort Worth" on January 21, 2009 3:29 PM:

    Michael,

Is it possible to view the Beam+ website in English? There are some amazing items on their blog that I would like to know more about, but can’t gather enough information on who makes the item.

    Thanks

Think I saw the Bicycle jacket at Opening Ceremony yesterday. They were just putting it out

Michael Williams on January 21, 2009 4:14 PM:

    Jon — $699-$999 retail.

    Tyler — Google translate?

Jake — this collection won’t be in stores until Fall 09. So I think it was a different jacket.

Michael Williams on January 21, 2009 4:51 PM:

Robin — more technical detailing, better fit / design. Cool factor as these are more limited in distribution. That or because they feel like it.

http://www.oipolloi.com will be stocking certain pieces from this range, the bicycle jacket for definite…

Is the “Motor Riding” jacket considered for motorcycle riding?

    Oh my god.

    nathaniel on January 21, 2009 9:51 PM:

jizzed just now. will this be available in any US barbour retailers?

    V.G. on January 22, 2009 4:26 AM:

What makes Barbour is that it’s a classic. It’s been that way forever, and it is what attracts me to their product. Personally, I like the tradition and heritage. It has HISTORY. I like the classics. I wouldn’t buy a slim fit Barbour. You don’t shoot birds in those, you go to Starbucks in them. I want my traditional traditional and fashionable fashionable. I realize I’m outnumbered in this, but I wanted to chime in.

    C.C.C. on January 22, 2009 6:25 AM:

Does anyone know where else in the UK they will be stocked?

    Gonz on January 22, 2009 6:47 AM:

    CCC,

‘The Highlands’ store on Regent Street seem to have the full array of Barbour.

VG, – Wholeheartedly agree with you

    Amit on January 22, 2009 11:24 AM:

Curious about the cut of the bicycle jacket. It looks like the side hems come up a bit to allow for easier leg movement. Feeling the cinch-waist and chest pockets. But anything else really different then the Bedale in terms of fit/cut?

To me, the Bedale remains the perfect winter cycling jacket. Just superb.

    Mayya on January 22, 2009 1:46 PM:

Wowed… Pretty amazing how the Japanese designers take the classic brands to the next level. And it’s not even their traditional aesthetic, however, they just absolutely “get it”…

"Big" Tony Ventresca on January 22, 2009 2:43 PM:

I agree with you, V.G. This brand has jumped the shark, I’m afraid. It’s original value is gone and no amount of re-printing old black-and-white advertisements will save it from being another fashion victim.

Johnny Slims on January 22, 2009 2:55 PM:

Are you guys crazy? Barbour is a beautiful, well made brand. Just because they have great classics (which they STILL do and always will make) does not mean the brand sucks because they make some new designs. Which happen to be dope, btw . . .

    Evolve or die, I say.

Will Reed on January 22, 2009 9:12 PM:

Here’s to hoping the motorcycle jacket will allow for easy tucking away of the extended cuff. Could be a less expensive Belstaff alternative.

    stephanie on January 22, 2009 11:42 PM:

    Good golly. This is fantastic.

    Tintin on January 23, 2009 8:54 AM:

Nothing like being humped from behind by waxed cotton. I have a Ducks Unlimited Barbour that was a special edition. I stole it from the girlfriends ex. It means so much moreto me than just paying for it.

Lesli Larson on January 23, 2009 4:41 PM:

Thanks for making this information and the jacket images available.

Several years ago, when Barbour issued more of these special editions designs into their general product line, they offered an “urban transport” jacket designed for cycling. The jacket had a nice, short cut (perhaps based on their old wading jacket) with simple pocketing (just two slash handwarmer pockets). I purchased a version and had Barbour US add an external/game pocket to compensate for the lack of stock carrying pockets. I’d love to see some of those recent, special edition jackets come into the product range.

Also, Barbour continues to issue and sell very nice, staple jackets from their classic product line (Bedale, Beaufort, Border, etc). Jackets are still made to their original specifications in the UK. Unless Barbour altogether abandons these core jackets or offshores production, I’m not sure there’s much to complain about here regarding the new, special edition releases. Even for those of us who cannot afford them, the jackets make for nice waxed cotton eye candy.

    eric on January 23, 2009 5:04 PM:

These are killer. My wife bought me a barbour for Christmas and i returned it because it was the beaufort
and a bit on the large side. i have been trying on different styles and waiting to figure out the best one. The Internationals are awesome but i don’t own a motorcycle, so….
Can you shed any light on where these new styles will be carried? I live in pasadena.

    r on January 23, 2009 10:12 PM:

eric, if you mean pasadena, ca, my friend tells me this english tea house/store used to stock barbour jackets, possibly been sitting on the shelves for years
    http://www.rosetreecottage.com/
and guessing opening ceremony on la cienega may stock these newer versions as they are availiable?
are the new barbour products still made in the UK?

Hobo Ken on January 23, 2009 11:44 PM:

Love that military style one with the funnel neck. Barbour needed a re-work.

    ATrueGentlemen on January 29, 2009 3:39 PM:

R, Some of the Barbour jackets are made in the U.K, but many are not. For the price of the new limited edition line, I’m sure they will either be made in U.K. or in Japan.

    angelo on February 2, 2009 4:46 AM:

Yo, I know you’re not a fan of self-promotional comments, but given your interest in vintage military, I think you may enjoy my post on military outerwear.

    Jackomo on February 13, 2009 11:12 AM:

Cycle in a Barbour? You’d sweat like a pig.

    Gareth on February 19, 2009 1:25 PM:

The Bureau in Belfast (www.thebureaubelfast.com) will also be getting some of the range in the UK. Their online store opens in a few weeks apparently.

    S on February 19, 2009 4:55 PM:

    Hi,
I’m really interested in getting the “Motor Jacket”.
Does anyone know where I can find it in France?
    Many thanks for your help.
    S.

    MR on February 19, 2009 6:35 PM:

Any bags , ie. Explorer , Tarras , in the new line ?

    coffeequeen on April 13, 2009 12:05 AM:

I realize it’s been a few months since this posting, but I was wondering if there is any further news or details concerning about where and when this line will be available. I think they look fantastic and plan to seriously consider buying one or more of them. However, I would love to know more details. Would it be advisable to attempt to preorder to reserve one? I just worry that if it will be a limited edition, and not widely available, that the opportunity to see and buy one of the jackets will pass me by.

    till507 on August 1, 2009 12:51 AM:

a number of these just hit Oi Polloi today for pre-sale (no motor riding jacket though). Any ideas as to where in the States these can be purchased? Help!

    Andrew on August 13, 2009 5:58 PM:

    Chris on September 10, 2009 4:05 PM:

Yeah! I just bought the biking Jacket from Liberty. Sorry, showing off; no real point to the post.

    Maz on October 13, 2009 10:55 AM:

I worked with ToKiTo in 2006 – 7, while in Japan, hand on heart one of Japan’s unsung hero’s of style.

Barbour were lucky to get him! His attention to detail is superb and choice of fabrics sublime!

    Matt on November 25, 2009 5:33 PM:

I have to get my hands on on of the bicycling jackets! Are these being reproduced?
