With men’s market week going on in NYC, a lot of people are in town and much is happening on the news front. On Tuesday I had a chance to meet up with the gentlemen from Beams+ for cocktails at White Star. Once the Absinthe arrived we quickly got down to talking shop. Seeing as Beams+ is my favorite store on earth, I take their recommendations seriously. One of the things that came up is a new limited edition line from the esteemed UK brand Barbour. The eight piece outerwear collection – designed by Japan’s To Ki To – is a hybrid of classic Barbour from the brand’s archives and modern technical outerwear. I took some time at the Collective trade show to investigate further. After coaxing the Barbour people to show me the line I was blown away by the collection.
A few things to point out. The line will be available in the U.S. this coming fall – which is great news. The bicycle jacket is pretty much the best cycling jacket I personally have ever seen. I will be owning that, for sure. In fact, the entire collection is one of the best things I have seen in a very long time. The range will only be available a select specialty stores, so if you want to carry the collection you had better get on it.

What makes Barbour is that it’s a classic. It’s been that way forever, and it is what attracts me to their product. Personally, I like the tradition and heritage. It has HISTORY. I like the classics. I wouldn’t buy a slim fit Barbour. You don’t shoot birds in those, you go to Starbucks in them. I want my traditional traditional and fashionable fashionable. I realize I’m outnumbered in this, but I wanted to chime in.
Does anyone know where else in the UK they will be stocked?

Curious about the cut of the bicycle jacket. It looks like the side hems come up a bit to allow for easier leg movement. Feeling the cinch-waist and chest pockets. But anything else really different then the Bedale in terms of fit/cut?
To me, the Bedale remains the perfect winter cycling jacket. Just superb.
Wowed… Pretty amazing how the Japanese designers take the classic brands to the next level. And it’s not even their traditional aesthetic, however, they just absolutely “get it”…
I agree with you, V.G. This brand has jumped the shark, I’m afraid. It’s original value is gone and no amount of re-printing old black-and-white advertisements will save it from being another fashion victim.
Are you guys crazy? Barbour is a beautiful, well made brand. Just because they have great classics (which they STILL do and always will make) does not mean the brand sucks because they make some new designs. Which happen to be dope, btw . . .

Here’s to hoping the motorcycle jacket will allow for easy tucking away of the extended cuff. Could be a less expensive Belstaff alternative.

Nothing like being humped from behind by waxed cotton. I have a Ducks Unlimited Barbour that was a special edition. I stole it from the girlfriends ex. It means so much moreto me than just paying for it.

Several years ago, when Barbour issued more of these special editions designs into their general product line, they offered an “urban transport” jacket designed for cycling. The jacket had a nice, short cut (perhaps based on their old wading jacket) with simple pocketing (just two slash handwarmer pockets). I purchased a version and had Barbour US add an external/game pocket to compensate for the lack of stock carrying pockets. I’d love to see some of those recent, special edition jackets come into the product range.
Also, Barbour continues to issue and sell very nice, staple jackets from their classic product line (Bedale, Beaufort, Border, etc). Jackets are still made to their original specifications in the UK. Unless Barbour altogether abandons these core jackets or offshores production, I’m not sure there’s much to complain about here regarding the new, special edition releases. Even for those of us who cannot afford them, the jackets make for nice waxed cotton eye candy.

R, Some of the Barbour jackets are made in the U.K, but many are not. For the price of the new limited edition line, I’m sure they will either be made in U.K. or in Japan.

I realize it’s been a few months since this posting, but I was wondering if there is any further news or details concerning about where and when this line will be available. I think they look fantastic and plan to seriously consider buying one or more of them. However, I would love to know more details. Would it be advisable to attempt to preorder to reserve one? I just worry that if it will be a limited edition, and not widely available, that the opportunity to see and buy one of the jackets will pass me by.

Barbour were lucky to get him! His attention to detail is superb and choice of fabrics sublime!
