Superior Labor | Engineer 2Way Tote Bag

The canvas bags from the Japanese maker Superior Labor seem to consistently rise to the top. This Enginner 2Way tote from Utility Coop is especially nice. How could you argue with a “Product by Handmade Superiority.”

I’m on the lookout for a good tote bag. Do you have a recommendation on one available in the states?

Michael Williams on January 19, 2009 9:14 AM:

I like this bag that Andy from Reference Library did for Kiosk: http://kioskkiosk.com/c/100/p/968/Reference_Library_Tote_Bag

    Beeks on January 19, 2009 9:44 AM:

Is it really appropriate for a grown man to walk around carrying a tote bag?
I really like this site and most of the posts are pretty interesting, but carrying a tote bag may be taking it a bit too far.
Exit question: Is the metrosexual a creation of the economic boom of the past decade? If our economy continues to suffer will the metrosexual decline with it?

    nick on January 19, 2009 9:49 AM:

It is indeed appropriate. The best one I’ve ever seen (and still covet) was printed for the antique dealer Isreal Sack. They are the perfect bags to hold all the required tools of a preview day… measuring tape, mini maglite, note book, auction catalog.

Michael Williams on January 19, 2009 9:50 AM:

    Beeks,

If you are using the word “metrosexual” I don’t really think I even need to address your question. You sir are out of touch. The good news is, at least you are here trying to learn the ways of 2009.

Yikes! The idea that a tote bag is somehow feminine or inappropriate…I feel like I’m back in catholic school (Or reading a six year old Gawker article).

This is a great looking bag, all the embellishments appear top notch. Plus its Japanese. They do everything but rap music better than us.

    jon on January 19, 2009 11:26 AM:

why not just buy a klein, jameson, or one of the other dozen or so american made tool bags that look just like this?

    Courtney on January 19, 2009 11:55 AM:

I’m laughing at your comment response Michael!

I can say: I have the most straight-laced (in terms of dressing) and preppy husband. He loves his chinos and when he travels, is always sure to pack his ties in their specific case.

He would LOVE this bag to use as a carry-on when he flies or weekend trips to his grandparent’s camp. Living in Houston, there is no need for a man to carry a bag of any sort (we drive everywhere and our cars are sort of our “bags”), but I could see this getting so much use in other ways. Too bad it’s not available stateside!

    Thom on January 19, 2009 12:02 PM:

Thank god I’m so short I can carry a tote bag without fear of reprisal from tall, manly men – they’ll just think I’m a child. Lovely choice as always.

(On an unrelated note there is a huge gap between this post and the next, at least in IE7.)

    mau on January 19, 2009 12:06 PM:

I like these ones a lot. Mostly the leather ones.

a perfect bag, the spray/stenciled logo is an unfortunate element, but otherwise great material use and detail.

Hobo Ken on January 19, 2009 8:50 PM:

I’m kind of with Beeks – the bag’s a bit girly.

    Kitty on January 19, 2009 9:06 PM:

Nice bag, but unless a person is paying union dues and needs to lug around tools all day, a bag like this is a bit much for everyday use. It’s bad enough that so many of us women have been infected with Big Bag Syndrome, you guys don’t need to join the madness.

Michael Williams on January 19, 2009 9:23 PM:

Hobo Ken — I think this is more your speed: http://www.uncrate.com ha

Kitty — I’ll keep the tote bag posts to a minimum if you promise to do the same with your purse talk.

    Best,
    ACL

    Kitty on January 19, 2009 9:39 PM:

I’m both anti-purse and anti-tote, so you got yourself a deal.

Hobo Ken on January 19, 2009 9:41 PM:

You have me totally wrong, old son. I can wax lyrical about clothing and accessories better than most . I’m telling you – the bag’s a bit girly.

    Florian on January 19, 2009 11:20 PM:

This sort of piece always confuses me a little…While I think the purpose of the canvas material is clear–something that should be used without too much care and fairly often–the leather straps seem to suggest exactly the opposite. I’m not sure when I’d use it, but it’s beautiful all the same.

    Bill on January 20, 2009 12:53 AM:

It’s a pleasant enough object, but I’ve only found these genuinely practical for books or groceries. For tools, not so much, and real tools would chew this up pretty quickly.

    Otherwise, arguably twee.

Russell Sprouts on January 20, 2009 12:59 AM:

Beeks my friend…don’t question a man carrying a bag around when you are featuring a bare-chested Putin front page on your bloggg.

    lefrenchmob on January 20, 2009 6:05 AM:

I own this tote myself and can tell that both the price and the quality is exceptional!

    Andy on January 20, 2009 9:30 AM:

Best looking diaper bag I’ve seen in a while. But agree with R, the stencil is one thing too many.

    H on January 20, 2009 2:30 PM:

Nice bag. I’ll get it for my MOM.

    Ryan on January 21, 2009 6:44 PM:

This bag is really not girly at all. Saddle thick leather on a heavy canvas, brass hardware and a size like this?

Has Michael not taught you anything?

    Jody on August 6, 2009 9:34 PM:

Has no one mentioned that these bags are now available stateside at JCrew? Really?

Michael Williams on August 6, 2009 9:35 PM:

    Hey Jody,

This post is from January 19th 2009. Did you notice that?
