That Autumn Look | Part One

Is it fall yet? September leads to October and then eventually to November which is when the weather gets just right. If the temperature could just settle into the low-50s to mid-40s (what I call Barbour weather) I would be happy. One of my favorite things in the world is to open the coat closet (hall closet as it was known back in Ohio) and resurrect the Barbour for another season. Last summer I had my Bedale re-waxed in New Hampshire, making the telltale tin cloth scent more enjoyable and pungent than ever.

In anticipation of the pending brisk autumn weather, I devised a series of still life product round-ups for your viewing pleasure. Part one, The Commuter, is pictured below.

Great Post – I love an inspiration board. What do you have for us next ACL?

    Eric R. on September 17, 2008 11:42 AM:

Hall closet…I thought it was just my family (in northeast Ohio) that used that term. I haven’t thought about it in years. Thanks for that little tug of nostalgia.

Nice look. I’m employed at a university and that would definitely work well. The suede patches on the cardigan especially add a touch of ivy league polish to the ensemble. Can’t wait to see what else you come up with for Fall.

I’ve been having this internal debate about what to do with my black, oxblood and brown brogues as I don’t wear suits to work anymore. I was thinking they may be obsolete….but I love how you’ve combined them with a dressy-casual look including chinos and other fall tweedy classics.

Please keep assembling the your inspiration boards, they’re inspiring!

Great stuff. I believe the Alden is a longwing, rather than a wing tip?

    Pit on September 17, 2008 12:41 PM:

Good looks. I’m definitely curious about the next installments. Any inspiration for a desk jockey?

Call me naive if you must, but what is a trouser strap?

    Edward on September 17, 2008 1:38 PM:

I thought it was a fancy-pants way of saying belt but apparently it something you wrap around your leg (or ankle, I guess) so as to not let your pants get caught in the bicycle chain.

Sam Jacobs on September 17, 2008 1:39 PM:

    clever…

Michael Williams on September 17, 2008 1:40 PM:

Edward is correct. With that particular bicycle you don’t really need it (since the chain is shielded), but you never can be too careful!

I love the Churchill Classic by Velorbis. It is so stylish and perfect for commuting. Check out their other models at http://www.velorbis.com

Ahem, a small word of advice that’ll save you a couple hunded bucks – – Go to Ebay UK for your Barbour. Dirt cheap and beat to hell for about $50. Throw in shipping for $30 and you have the real McCoy with distressed character.

I’m surprised that putz, Ralph hasn’t figured this on out.

james fox on September 17, 2008 3:19 PM:

excellent tip about ebay.co.uk, kicking myself for not having thought of it…. for the ladies, use that to snare less expensive Orla Kiely items too…

In agreement about a well worn barbour……they should never be purchased new and never be rewaxed. The old coats are made better, nicer lining and an older bedale for example has chest pockets with closing flaps and a slimmer cut.

    Andy on September 17, 2008 4:16 PM:

Meet the Yorkshire Countryman. I got the four-pocket Bedale that Ricky mentioned for a song.

    r on September 17, 2008 6:32 PM:

the yorkshire countryman is the man, a few coats from him are keeping us happy……also spitalfields market for those visiting london.

I finally appreciate cardigans. I look forward to dressing them both up and down.

The hall closet, right by the front door. Mmm, memories. That was where my parents stored the winter coats, the liquor, the vinyl records. In the winter it was always cold and in the summer it smelled of humidity.

Not sold on the Salinger, though.

    stephanie on September 17, 2008 10:53 PM:

Love the elbow patches + the wingtips.

The red tie is a nice touch.

    iSynth on September 18, 2008 6:14 AM:

catcher in the rye… i was wondering how that supposed to correlate with bicycle ride

    some classic things…
Question: Would a gentleman who does not need eye glasses dare keep a pair of clear lensed anglos?

    sam on October 5, 2008 5:51 PM:

no eb, no he would not, be patient you too will really need them someday, for now enjoy being able to not wear them.

    sam on October 15, 2008 11:14 AM:

I took TinTin’s (excellent) advice, got one for 110 with shipping, looks great. But 40 is way too big for me, so so sad. Maybe you guys will see it on e-bay….

Michael Williams on October 15, 2008 11:31 AM:

    Bedale or Beaufort??
