Men’s Vogue contributing editor and In Her Eyes blogger Amanda Brooks appeared on CBS The Early Show this past Friday to discuss neckties. You have to hand it to Ms. Brooks and Men’s Vogue for putting together a style based morning show fashion segment that is actually interesting to watch. Most often I find myself wincing and switching channels as the banter turns ridiculous. Not the case here, I found Amanda’s thoughts to be interesting and informative, plus she isn’t bad on the eyes.
A few things to note in the segment:
- Notice the goofy tie set-design.
- Who picked the music? ZZ Top? For real?
- In the beginning, notice the “sassy” young lady in the background. The only show that should legally be allowed to have bystanders in the background is College Game Day.
- I love that they made it a tie fashion show.
I really hope this “no tie” thing is a trend. I think a tie can often really pull together an outfit and elevate it to a look that is so much more refined.
I’m so tired of sloppy, distressed and casual Fridays bleeding into the rest of the week. Bring back a good dose of formality, I say.
Dear Peter,
I agree with you. It is good to be the best dressed guy in the room.

ACL
I dig her enthusiasm for ties, and some of the stuff on her blog is great, but occasionally she hasn’t the slightest clue what she’s talking about. The knitted tie has such a considerable heritage of stylish men (Michael Caine, Paul Newman, Elvis, Jagger). To link it to David Beckham, the high prince of chavviness, is absurd. Also I believe the 3rd model was wearing a summer Black Fleece suit and looked fantastic.
‘Business Casual’ is an exercise in absurdity. I see the logic behind it, trying to relieve stuffiness of the work place, but just because one’s boss isn’t wearing a tie doesn’t mean his employees can show him any less respect or obedience. On the contrary, dressing well it the workplace gives me a sense of dignity that I cannot always derive from the menial labors of the everyday.
Great Blog.
I was stunned by the prices of the ties in this piece. Maybe I just haven’t been paying attention lately. I kinda’ liked the ZZ Top “Sharp Dressed Man” in the background – nice humorous bit of rock Americana. Cheers for the post, HTJ
